WWE SmackDown! vs RAW 2006, 2007's predecessor was critically acclaimed by both fans and game reviewers alike. The game had brought back the vibe the series had apparently lost with its own predecessor, Smackdown vs. RAW. Anticipation ran high for what was supposed to be the final current-generation installment of Smackdown, and fans were excited when the first details began to emerge in March 2006.

The game released in November, in time for the holiday season to generally positive reviews with the theme of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The tried and proven smackdown success was evident, even if it left some feeling that the game was overly similar to 2006, and that the control scheme was outdated. There were also several notable glitches, including tag teams announced as singles' wrestlers and RVD unable to perform the 5 Star in a ladder match. Regardless, it became a hot sell and can be found at reduced prices for most current-generation versions.
